This blog was created to use as a repository of resources and student work about controversial issues in science.

Today's students are digital citizens. A blog allows you to work with media and formats you are familiar with, yet retains the same writing and research skills used on paper-based projects.

As it grows, the blog can be used as both a resource and a source of reflection. Knowing that it could be accessible to anyone using the correct search terms holds you accountable for accurate and careful work you can be proud of. A sense of permanency and purpose comes with the fact that your work may be useful for others.

A blog also allows students to work collaboratively and display completed work.

Topics so far include Genetic Modification of Foods and Gene Therapy. Posts are tagged, so navigate using the word cloud to find topics and posts of relevance.

Some posts have been selected with Stage 6 Biology topics in mind, but the content should be useful for Stage 5 students to look at some of the ethical issues included in the Australian Curriculum.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

Become an educated, informed citizen, able to debate, defend and critically analyse.

Learn to navigate the mire of trashy journalism, sensationalist agendas and real science to find the truth as we know it.

Add your contributions to the blog as comments on the most relevant post. Your comments may be edited and made into stand-alone posts.

Rules for participation:

No personal attacks allowed - question the idea, not the person posting it.
Keep it factual - reference your sources correctly, include a permalink if available.
Try and view the topic from varying perspectives. For genetically modified foods, consider the position of farmer, environmental activist, scared consumer, scientist, people who struggle to find enough food to eat. Look at pros and cons of other issues, there might not always be a clear 'right' and 'wrong'.
It is ESSENTIAL that you TAG your post with the topic - refer to the word cloud in the right side bar for ideas, if nothing quite fits, add a new one!
